The Sacred Lake Trek - Bhairav Kunda
Lake
These lakes in the Himalayas
are situated in Listi V.D.C. close to the Tibetan border. This Kund (lake) is
one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans.
Both Hindu and Buddhist
devotees visit this high-elevated holy mountain lake to pay their homage and
take a bath during every Bhadra (August) Full Moon. The trekking experience
is further enhanced by the spectacular view of the Himalayan peaks, such as
the Dorje Lhakpa (6966 m).
The trek starts
from The Borderland Resorts and follow the old trade route between Nepal and
Tibet.
Some of the highlights
of the treks include:
- The
Duganagadi Fortress (2400 m),
a maze of crumbling walls strategically situated on a plateau with stunning
views of the surrounding areas.
- Phunboche Dada (3800
m), a dense lush forest cloaked with old twisted tree-trunks that are
draped in moss and surrounded by numerous species of ferns and other assorted
flora. In the spring, the countryside comes alive with red and white rhododendrons
in full bloom.
- Bhairav Kund Lake
(4300 m), one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans and our
ultimate destination. From the pass the views of the Himalayas are up-close
and spectacular - at 6,966m Dorje Lakpa resembles an inverted shark tooth
looming in the distance.
- Chagam (2200 m).
One of the highlights of the trek is an all women's monastery housing some
300 nuns. Some travel from as far away as Ladakh in order to spend time, learn
and meditate here. The layout of the village is unusual in that each nun has
her own house, thus creating a colourful spattering of red, yellow, green
and white homes throughout the beautiful countryside.
