Trekking by Borderlands

We operate treks to two major destinations - Dugunagadi Fortress and Bhairav Kunda. Day hikes can also be arranged to the surrounding villages and locations.

Although Nepal offers opportunities for trekking in unspoilt pristine areas, most visitors to the nation rarely get the chance to experience this type of travel. Treks into simple rural mountain villages combined with the splendid beauty of the surrounding landscape and snowcapped peaks present a picture of all of Nepal’s glory and charm.

Borderlands’ offers treks that are not found in any guidebook, nor will you come across teahouses, lodges or apple pie during the course of your trek. By travelling on foot to these remote areas, we are able to offer a unique opportunity for every visitor to interact with local people, their culture and their landscapes.

The Hidden Fortress Trek

The Dugunagadi Fortress is a maze of crumbling walls strategically situated on a plateau. The views are stunning; during the day one gazes at the Tibetan snow-capped peaks and by night, the lights of Khasa, the first Tibetan town north of the Friendship Bridge, glisten throughout the dark evening sky. The Fortress is situated at an altitude of 2084 m and was built in 1854 by the Nepali Army to attack the Bhot, a region behind the Himalaya, which is in Tibet.

The Sacred Lake Trek - Bhairavkunda Lake

The Dugunagadi Fortress is a maze of crumbling walls strategically situated on a plateau. The views are stunning; during the day one gazes at the Tibetan snow-capped peaks and by night, the lights of Khasa, the first Tibetan town north of the Friendship Bridge, glisten throughout the dark evening sky. The Fortress is situated at an altitude of 2084 m and was built in 1854 by the Nepali Army to attack the Bhot, a region behind the Himalaya, which is in Tibet.

The Duganagadi Fortress (2400 m), is a maze of crumbling walls strategically situated on a plateau with stunning views of the surrounding areas.

Phunboche Dada (3800 m), a dense lush forest cloaked with old twisted tree-trunks that are draped in moss and surrounded by numerous species of ferns and other assorted flora. In the spring, the countryside comes alive with red and white rhododendrons in full bloom.

Bhairav Kunda Lake (4300 m), one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans and our ultimate destination. From the pass, the views of the Himalayas are up-close and spectacular – at 6,966m Dorje Lakpa resembles an inverted shark tooth looming in the distance.

Chagam (2200 m), one of the highlights of the trek is an all women’s monastery housing some 300 nuns. Some travel from as far away as Ladakh in order to spend time, learn and meditate here. The layout of the village is unusual as each nun has her own house, thus creating a colourful spattering of red, yellow, green and white homes throughout the beautiful countryside.

Listi (2180 m), a charming village overlooking the Bhote Koshi river with stunning views of the surrounding areas.
